| Norton's seems like just another place in the Soulard neighborhood, an old building or two rehabbed as a restaurant-bar with a working fireplace and patio in back. But it's less drafty than most of its peers, the patio-cum-garden is particularly charming and the regulars are a little older, though they'd be offended if you referred to them as mature. In addition, the kitchen seems to be a little snappier. The Cajun-Creole menu is safe by St. Louis standards---nothing flammable---but there's always Norton's packaged seasoning, sold in local grocery stores, for those who think the shrimp Creole (long on shrimp, short on vegetables) or jambalaya (thick, but spicier) need a jolt. Watch for crawfish potpie; while it suffers from an unfortunate St. Louis tendency to put cheese on everything, it’s packed with crawfish and has a bodacious pastry crust under that cheese. The patio can get rowdy on the weekends. |
